FiiO K5 Pro ESS Desktop DAC and Headphone Amplifier Review
By • March 24, 2026
The FiiO K5 Pro bridges the gap between entry-level and audiophile-grade desktop audio. This DAC/amp combo punches well above its weight class, driving everything from sensitive IEMs to power-hungry planars with ease.
Sound Quality
Powered by the ESS ES9038Q2M DAC chip, the K5 Pro delivers a clean, detailed, and remarkably transparent sound signature. The noise floor is vanishingly low — even with sensitive IEMs, there is dead silence between tracks. Bass is tight and controlled, mids are beautifully textured, and the treble extends naturally without harshness.
The amp section delivers up to 1500mW into 32 ohms, which is enough power to drive the vast majority of headphones on the market. Even notoriously difficult loads like the HiFiMAN Sundara and Sennheiser HD 600 series sing with authority from the K5 Pro.
Features & Connectivity
Inputs include USB, optical, coaxial, and RCA line-in — everything you could want from a desktop unit. The 6.35mm headphone output is solid and reliable, and there is a line-out for connecting powered speakers. The large aluminum volume knob is smooth and precise with zero channel imbalance.
Supports up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM and native DSD256 decoding. Plug it into your PC or Mac via USB and it serves as a full DAC, replacing your motherboard audio entirely.
Build Quality
The aluminum chassis is compact and elegant, fitting neatly on any desk. The rubberized base keeps it planted. The volume knob doubles as a power switch with a satisfying click.
Verdict
The FiiO K5 Pro is the desktop DAC/amp to beat under $200. It sounds incredible, drives virtually anything, and offers connectivity options that rival units costing three times more. Your first real step into audiophile territory.
